Movie Review : Department
Rating : 2.75 / 5
Banner : Ram Gopal Varma Productions, Viacom 18 Pictures, Uberoi Line Productions
Cast : Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Daggubati Rana, Abhimanyu Singh, Vijay Raaz, Deepak Tijori, Lakshmi Manchu, Madhu Shalini, Anjana Sukhani, Nathalia Kaur and Others
Music : Bappa Lahiri, Dharam Sandeep, Vikram Negi
Producer: Ram Gopal Varma
Director: Ram Gopal Varma
Released Date: May 18, 2012

Ram Gopal Varma had proudly proclaimed a few days back that he has made a lot of technical innovations in his latest movie ‘Department’ and that he had used cameras in all odd places like the carom board striker, coffee spoon, car steering etc. Is ‘Department’ just a hollow vessel with only the aforementioned technical gimmicks or is there some stuff as well? Read on to find out.

In a nutshell, this movie is about a separate department within the police force that is given all the powers to fight Mumbai’s two primary gangster units (Sawatya’s and Mohammad Gauri’s). This department is basically an encounter squad and all the stakeholders in this department have gray shades be it Sarjerao Gaikwad, a gangster-turned politician (played by the Big B) or Inspector Mahadev Bhosle, the leader of this department squad (played by Sanjay Dutt). An honest young cop Shivnarayan (Rana) is also part of this squad and he learns the tricks of the department as the movie wears on. Whether the prime gangsters are brought to task and whether Shiv manages to retain his honesty is the remaining part of the movie.

The only entertaining aspect of ‘Department’ is the Big B’s electric screen presence, voice modulation and inimitable style. The screen sparkles whenever he is there. Rana looks the part convincingly as the rugged cop though his emoting skills are better left unanalyzed. There are blatant changes in Sanjay Dutt’s looks during the course of the movie. He is seen with a baseball cap for the majority of the movie while his hair suddenly appears thick in certain scenes and barren in other scenes. Guess, his hair transplant coincided with this movie’s shooting days. Madhu Shalini looks seducing as the female gangster while her muse in the movie, Abhimanyu Singh is a mere caricature compared to his terrific show in Raktha Charitra. Vijay Raaz is a natural in whatever role he does and it’s the same here too as Sawatya. Anjana Sukhani and Lakshmi Manchu have miniscule parts as the wives of the lead cops

There is a very crude item number in the first half inspired by Ilayaraja’s yesteryear chartbuster. The picturization of this song will make even the young male members in the audience squirm in their seats. Such is the level of skin shown in this song. There are 2 other songs which do nothing to the movie’s flow.

The previously mentioned technical gimmicks with the camera are nothing but indulgences on RGV’s part. It’s just a case of an empty vessel making more noise. The frequent close-ups, jump cuts, pans, tracks, tilts, zooms etc. get to your head pretty soon.

To conclude, Department is a pretty boring movie save for the Big B’s presence. Such action movies need the lead hero to be at his invincible best. But, here Sanjay Dutt is just a shadow of his former self and inspite of Rana’s action hero looks, he is not a known face in Hindi by any means. RGV has not concentrated on the core of any movie i.e. the content and just embellished it with crude item numbers and atrocious camera angles. Such movies deserve the cold shoulder.

Movie Name: Bbuddah – Hoga Terra Baap
Banner: AB Corp Ltd & Viacom 18 Motion Pictures
Cast : Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Sonu Sood, Prakash Raj, Raveena Tandon, Charmi, Sonal Chauhan, Minissha Lamba, Mahie Gill, Vishwajeet Pradhan, Makrand Deshpande, Shawar Ali
Director of Photography : Amol Rathod
Choreography : Remo D’Souza
Editor: Shekhar
Story : Puri Jagannath
Music: Vishal-Shekhar
Producer: AB Corp Ltd & Viacom 18 Motion Pictures
Director: Puri Jagannath

Story:

Sonu Sood (ACP Karan) catch a man who explodes two bombs in a Busy area. Prakash Raj (Kabir) who is the man behind those blasts want to kill Sonu Sood. He wants to hire a hit man to do the needful. Then enters Amitabh (Vijju) who tries to kill Sonu Sood but he didn’t. The time arrives and Amitabh has to kill Sonu Sood on that day. Then comes a twist in the tale which completely turns over everything upside down. See the film to know what it is.

Analysis:

Once again Puri Jagannadh show his mark in this movie. This is Just like Pokiri Movie with an angry old man.

Puri Successfully Manage all the twists in the movie Successfully. Big B he is main soul of the movie. He carried off his role with élan. Amitab bachchan fans visit the theaters again again for his performence.

First half going nice we dont find any story but in second half we found that. The real Twist of the story lies in the second half and it is where the director excelled. There are some funny scenes, good one liners and also some sentiment. Amitabh, Prakash Raj conversation in the climax is fun to watch.

Puri Jagannadh has used Some Spectacular dialogs and few scenes from his Telugu films. Telugu audience may not find them fresh but Bollywood audience will thoroughly enjoy those scenes and dialogs. although its a complete entertainer

Performances:

Amitabh is a gift to watch. Right from the 1st scene he clad in a white dress and a yellow muffler to the scene where he exits as Hema Malini utters ‘Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap’, Big B stole the show. He has excelled in every scene. It is a one man show all the way. One liners written for his character are hilarious.

Hema Malini prove she still a dream girl. She did a Great job.
Raveena just Rocks.
Sonu Sood is Superb. He did a splendid job in the scenes which he confronts Amitabh.
No one except Prakash Raj can make such an ordinary character look strong on screen.
Sonal Chauhan Looks so cute.
Charmi scores few brownie points. She has some light moments which will have you in splits.
Subba Raju did a very good job.
Rajeev Mehta and Shahwar Ali are fine.

Tehnicalities:

Dialogs have Puri’s mark written all over. Most of the dialogs had punch and funny.
Vishal Shekar Music is fine.
background score by Anoop Rubens is good job.
Editing and cinematography are top.
Production values are top.

Puri jagannath Knows that Bollywod People love massmasala Movies Now By thi Flick he show his mark in Bollywood.

Plus Points:

- Big B Amitab bachchan
- Punch Dialogs
- Mass Masala elements

Minus points:

- Story a Bit
- 1st Hour of The Movie

Verdict : 3.5/5

Rakta Charitra 2 Movie Review

Story :

A powerful tale, the story takes off from the first part where Pratap Ravi (Vivek Oberoi) rises to absolute power. However, his regime gets a jitter with a bomb attack on his car convoy. Enquiries reveal that it is Surya Bhanureddy(Suriya), son of Narasimha Reddy (Kitty) who was killed by Pratap Ravi. DCP Mohan Prasad (Sudeep) traces out Surya and gets him to jail. Meanwhile, Pratap Ravi realizes the threat of Surya and begins to chalk plans to eliminate him. However, none of them get successful. Meanwhile, Surya gets close to Muddu Krishna (Aijaz Khan), a hardcore killer in the jail and reveals his flashback. The battle begins between Pratap and Surya and who has the final success forms the rest of the story.

Performances :

Surya is terrific. His eyes do all the talking in this film and RGV simply highlighted those eyes with his typical lighting schemes. Watch out for Surya’s eyes when he sits in the shadows and speak. He looks like a tiger on the prowl. His performance in the scene when his family gets killed in a bomb attack is outstanding. Vivek Oberoi, who looked convincing in the first part, is below the mark in this part. May be it is due to the sliding graph of his characterization in this version. The director deliberately made his character look weak here. Vivek is simply outdone by Surya in the only confrontation scene in between them.

Priyamani is perfect as Bhavani. Radhika Apte scores brownie points towards the climax. Shatrughan Sinha doesn’t have much to do here. Sudeep is as brilliant as always, and his presence is felt. Subhalekha Sudhakar is apt and so is Tanikella Bharani.

Plus points:

* Suriya’s Performance
* Cinematography
* Shot Composition
* Opening Ten Minutes and Climax
* Background Score

Minus points:

- Too much twisting of the real tale
- Dragging screenplay and content less scenes.
- Poor climax

Analysis :

The film is a sequel to the original hit ‘Rakta Charitra’ and true to the hype, the second part has not let the audience down. While it has got some of the finest technically crafted sequences, the content part is so strong and intense that there is not a single minute of idle time for the audience. Each and every frame has been composed with eye for detail and the gripping screenplay makes it even more interesting. The movie’s plot takes cinematic liberties in perspective and narration, due to this most of the film appear to be fictional.

While this may not be the film for kids or lady audience, there is a soft touch to the entire revenge saga with an enlightening message which must be taken by the viewer. At the box office, this will click in a big and better way than the first part.

Verdict : Intense and violent
